The reason why Ordinary Time is referred to as “ordinary” is simply because each week of Ordinary Time has a certain number. The Latin term ordo, which is where the English word order comes from, is the root of the Latin word ordinalis, which denotes numbers in a sequence. As a result, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time actually represent the Church’s organized life. During this time, instead of living in celebration (as during the Christmas and Easter seasons) or more austere penance (as during Advent and Lent), we live in anticipation of Christ’s Second Coming
